to use a rifle. he's been awarded for his marksmanship. >> reporter: that's right. the u.s. navy quickly assembling what records it has on this man. and telling us he was a navy reservist. just until a few days ago, he separated from the naval service. we don't know when the last time is he showed up. but he has shooting expertise. let's go through it. according to navy records, he has been awarded the rifle marksman ribbon and the pistol expert medal. these are awarded for achieving a certain level of shooting accuracy at various distances. let's be clear. the plan is not a navy commander, he's not a navy s.e.a.l. he held a number of jobs as a reservist in navy security operations. in fact, he went to iraq, we are told, and had a job providing military security on iraqi oil platforms, to have that job, it is most likely we are told he did receive some advanced weapons training. you will remember back in those days, those oil platforms, a lot of concern about small boat attacks, sniper attacks, that sort of thing. so he clearly has a certain level, a worrisome level of weapons expertise.
this morning on the shooting death of a former navy s.e.a.l. known as the deadliest sniper in u.s. history. 38-year-old chris kyle was killed yesterday along with a second man at a gun range near ft. worth, texas. these are pictures of kyle taken from the security company he founded after leaving the navy. the gunman accused of killing kyle has been identified as eddie ray routh. he is in custody facing two counts of capital murder. earlier i spoke with one of kyle's friends, jason kos, about the man he called a war hero. >> he and a friend took a marine that was suffering from ptsd to a gun range to shoot and as a way that he always did giving back and, you know, it was certainly him taking his time to help, again, help war heroes. >> he had quite a reputation in the field as one of the most lethal snipers out there. how did he handle that? >> you know, he viewed, chris viewed it as his job and he was protecting his brothers, frankly. he as a man was quite contrary to that because he was incredibly loving father and charismatic and really caring person. so, it's quite a contrast from what he

discharged from the u.s. navy reserve earlier this year. in fact, just a short time ago, after serving in several overseas jobs. basically as a security officer. he was a lieutenant. he had weapons training in the navy. but not a commando, not a navy s.e.a.l., this was basic security work. nonetheless, he had two awards critically. the rifle marksman ribbon, and the pistol expert medal. this meant he had some qualifications in shooting at some expert level at particular distances or ranges. i think, though, very clear we should also understand that he had expertise through his service as a police officer. many people, many police officers serve in the military reserve, and they have a lot of weapons expertise due to all of that. still, very concerning, obviously, because of his background. >> were you able to learn anything about did the military have any information on his mental health? >> reporter: well, this would be a matter of privacy concerns. but at the moment, they wouldn't publicly release that. at the moment, very preliminary, there is no indication of that, because he was h

special here in texas. want to turn briefly to the shocking story of the navy s.e.a.l. sniper, who had 160 combat kills in iraq but was shot dead this weekend by a former marine on a gun range here in texas very similar to the one i'm sitting in now. chris kyle began working to help fellow vets suffering from post traumatic distress syndrome. one of his co-authors join us now, a man who knew him well, jim defelice. tragedy, this. your friend was trying to help another armed servicemen who had come out, suffering from this very frequent problem now that so many ex-soldiers have, post traumatic stress disorder and it ended tragically. what did you feel when you heard about this in terms of what chris was trying to achieve? >> i didn't -- i still -- i guess i'm still in total disbelief that chris is gone. and i think that everyone that knew him feels the same way. chris -- i personally don't know the exact details of what happened. and i'm sure that more information will come out, but chris, even before the book, even before he was famous, devoted a considerable amount of time to helping vete
